“Librarians are expected to be experts in organizing and ensuring proper classification and placement of library materials for easy access and retrieval. In the same way, librarians must also be provided with essential information about proper buying and storing food.”

This was highlighted in the welcome remarks of Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, DOST-FNRI Director IV and Scientist II and Nutrition Research Information Network (NUTRINET) Governing Board Chair, during the NUTRINET Zoominar#1 on “Food Buying and Storing: Tips or Tricks?” on September 30, 2021.

The zoominar, conducted in partnership with the Medical and Health Librarians Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MAHLAP), discussed practical buying tips and proper food storage tricks.

Ms. Emelorna E. Delgado, President of MAHLAP, emphasized in her message that the webinar also provides opportunity for participants to expand partnerships and networking.

Ms. Josefina T. Gonzales, Science Research Specialist (SRS) II, and Ms. Celina Ann J. Navarro, SRS I of the DOST-FNRI were the resource persons.

Ms. Gonzales presented “Food Buying” with emphasis on reading labels, while Ms. Navarro discussed “Food Storing”.

After each presentation, an open forum became the venue for the exchange of interesting questions from participants that the resource persons adequately answered.

Dr. Milflor S. Gonzales, NUTRINET Technical Committee Chair, and also the Chief Science Research Specialist and Technology Diffusion, and Science and Technology Services Division Chief of the DOST-FNRI, gave the closing remarks.

Dr. Gonzales encouraged the participants to continue pursuing further education and trainings to build an information resource-rich community, where knowledge is shared and maximized for the greater good. She concluded her message by quoting Linton Weeks: “In the nonstop tsunami of global information, librarians provide us with floaties and teach us to swim".

The Zoominar was attended by 146 librarians from various sectors like the academe, government, health services and allied professions.
